Virginia Derby Day
is Finally Here!

Virginia DerbyThe biggest day of racing on Virginia’s annual calendar is here! This Saturday, July 18 brings thoroughbred racing’s top jockeys, trainers and three year old  turf horses to Colonial Downs for the 12th annual $750,000 Virginia Derby (Gr. II).

Doors open at 11 AM and the first of 12 races goes to post at 12:55 PM. The Derby itself is the 11th race of the day, and goes off at 5:59 PM. There are many ways to enjoy Derby Day, so go to colonialdowns.com for all the details.

General admission is $5 and kids 12 and under are free. Reserved grandstand seats are $10 and there are two great parties --- read about them later in this newsletter.

Nicanor

The featured horse of the day is Nicanor, a full brother to Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro. Nicanor’s first stakes race will be the Virginia Derby, so locals have a chance to witness history here!

Nicanor, who has the connections that big brother Barbaro had (owner Lael Stables, trainer Michael Matz), will break from post four against nine other rivals in the $750,000 Virginia Derby (Gr. II).

With four on-the-board finishes in five starts, Nicanor is the morning-line favorite at 7-2 and hopes to run away with a win just as he did in his two most recent turf starts! Come out and cheer for Barbaro’s little brother as he attempts to win his first stakes race at Colonial Downs!
