Trainer Kathleen O’Connell, who has a 36 horse stable based at Colonial Downs this summer, recorded her 10,000th start as a trainer in Sunday afternoon’s third race.

O’Connell entered Sunday’s action three starts shy of that historic number, and after a second and third place finish in the first two races, she sent S S Royal Endeavor out in the third. The 5 year old mare did disappoint though, finishing last, but the day soon got better.

In the 7th race, O’Connell had a pair of horses in and they finished first and second. Gold Pageantry pulled away from the field in the stretch and won by three lengths over stablemate Hit Another Gear. Jockeys James Vail and Rosemary Homeister Jr. guided the pair respectively.

For the afternoon, O’Connell’s horses collected a win, four seconds, a third and a ninth place finish. In her thirty-year career, she now has 1,274 wins, 1,307 runner-up finishes and 1,231 thirds with purse earnings over the $20,000,000 mark.

Colonial Downs continues its opening weekend festivities Monday with a holiday race card beginning at 12:55 PM. The first 2,000 paid admissions receive a Colonial Downs baseball cap. All active and retired military, and their immediate family members, receive free general admission. The York River Concert Band will perform patriotic favorites between races on the winners circle stage.
