Virginia-bred Prep Races take Center Stage at Colonial Downs This Weekend

October 5, 2012

(NEW KENT, VA) — Colonial Downs, in the homestretch now of its fifteenth annual harness racing season, will host a series of $5,000 Virginia-bred prep races this weekend that lead up to next Sunday’s $400,000 “Day of Champions” program.

The prep races, for pacers and trotters of both sexes, will be split between the cards this weekend. Two year olds will compete Saturday in four races while sophomore competitors will battle Sunday in another quartet.

Last year’s freshmen champions will all return in hopes of another trip to the winner’s circle as a three year old. Jane Dunavant’s Just Slick, two year old colt & gelding champ, headlines the 3 year old division Sunday. Runner-ups Klondike Mike and Lukin Lo are both set to go as well. This will be a non-betting race at 12:40 PM prior to the pari-mutuel card at 1:00 PM.

Blueridge Dancer, Blueridge Wildcat and Blueridge Tebow, top three respective finishers in the two year old colt & gelding pace, will again square off a year later.  Favored Blueridge Dancer, a Real Desire gelding, has bankrolled $83,562 for owner/trainer Tye Loy. Leading driver Chris Page will be in the sulky Sunday.

One-two finishers in last fall’s 2 year old filly trot, Blueridge Abigail and Spitfire Rose, are both entered Sunday. The former, with a bankroll of $209,050 and a mark of 1:56 3/5, is favored. Two starts ago, she was a runner-up in the $200,000 Indiana Sire Stake finale at Indiana Downs for trainer Dane Snyder.

In Sunday’s filly pace, both of last year’s runner ups are favored over the 2011 champ. Amanda Jackson’s Hillbilly Desire is the 8-5 early pick while Lorie Davis’s Genie’s Genie is the second choice at 2-1, while Mark Gray’s Hot Beach Girl is third despite her success last fall. Hillbilly Desire has yet to finish out of the money in 8 Colonial Downs starts and boasts a mark of 1:52 3/5 while Genie’s Genie has a bankroll of $70,000-plus.

Saturday’s Virginia-bred freshmen action will include a non-betting race at 12:40 PM. The 2 year old colt & gelding trot will precede the pari-mutuel card, which begins at 1 PM.
