Secretariat Birthday Celebration At The Meadow To Pay Big Tribute To Big Red

Doswell, VA - The SECRETARIAT BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AT THE MEADOW is putting on a  big show for Big Red on March 29-30.  The event marks his birthday of March 30 and kicks off the 40th anniversary of his historic Triple Crown win of 1973.  Penny Chenery, “the First Lady of Racing,” is slated to return to her champion’s birthplace to greet his legions of fans who are coming from all across the country.  She will be joined by Secretariat’s jockey, Ron Turcotte; exercise rider, Charlie Davis; and her daughter, Kate Chenery Tweedy, co-author of the book “Secretariat’s Meadow – The Land, The Family, The Legend.”  This will mark the first time that these members of the Secretariat team have all been together at The Meadow.

Commonwealth Fairs and Events of Virginia and Secretariat.com of Louisville, Kentucky are co-hosting this milestone celebration at The Meadow Event Park. The festivities begin on Friday evening March 29 with a “Winner’s Circle” cocktail reception. This will be followed by a unique opportunity to watch the Disney film “Secretariat” and afterwards hear Ms. Chenery and the Secretariat team share their memories of the legendary Thoroughbred. Tickets are limited and must be purchased in advance.   

The centerpiece of the festivities is the Birthday Program on Saturday, March 30 from 11 am – 5:00 pm. at The Meadow Pavilion.  Fans will enjoy:

·         Autograph sessions with Penny, Kate, Ron and Charlie

·         Meeting the original grooms and riders of Meadow Stable

·         Meeting local Secretariat descendants Covert Action and Rainaway

·         Extensive display of Secretariat merchandise and memorabilia

·         Exclusive display of the very first training saddles worn by Secretariat and his stablemate, Riva Ridge, winner of the 1972 Kentucky Derby

·         Presentation of horses and hounds by the Caroline Hunt

·         Displays by local horse groups and Colonial Downs Racetrack

·         Tram tours and walking tours of the farm

·         Kiddie Corral with activities for children and mini horses to pet

·         A special musical tribute to Secretariat, performed exclusively for this event
