Virginia Stampede Pro Rodeo Set to Go This Weekend at Colonial Downs

April 23, 2013

Colonial Downs will play host to cowboys and cowgirls from all over the country in the Virginia Stampede Pro Rodeo this coming Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon, April 27 & 28, at the New Kent track.

This IPRA (International Pro Rodeo Association) sanctioned event, presented by Myrna’s Boots ‘ Bits, will feature seven different competitions including bull riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling, team roping and more.

Sixteen bull riders have entered Saturday’s rodeo while eleven others will compete in Sunday’s matinee. Participating riders are coming in from as far away as South Carolina, Indiana, Connecticut, Oklahoma, Oregon and North Carolina and as close by as Dinwiddie, Virginia.

“There are a good number of kids entered in other events here this weekend that have competed at the National High School Rodeo Finals in Wyoming,” said local businessman and longtime rodeo participant Frankie Shockley. “In addition to the talented kids, there are some locally based past champions scheduled to appear, several of whom have been competing for five decades.”

The New Kent track hosted a rodeo last August for the first time in ten years and was so pleased with its success, that it expanded the event to two different weekends in 2013. The “Stampede” will return on August 2 and 3 after the summer thoroughbred season is over.

Advance sale general admission tickets to this weekend’s shows are $15 for adults and $5 for kids 12 & under. A $30 Family 4-Pack is available as well. Grandstand seating is $22 and an “all-inclusive” 4th floor “Party Zone” ticket, which includes a barbecue dinner, beverages and balcony access, is $50.

Tickets can be purchased at colonialdowns.com or at Myrna’s Boots ‘n Bits, located in south Richmond at 1112 Car Mia Way.

Doors open 90 minutes before the rodeo each day with live music on a trackside concert stage. Simulcast wagering from tracks around the country will be offered as well.

Colonial Downs will open its 17th annual thoroughbred race season on June 8th and continue on a Wednesday thru Sunday basis until July 13th. After the next rodeo in early August, the track will host a AMA Pro flat track motorcycle race on August 24th.
