Ostriches, Camels & Animal Mascots Provide a Fun Father’s Day at Colonial Downs

June 16, 2013

(NEW KENT, VA) — In addition its regular horse race program, an ostrich race, camel race and animal mascot race highlighted Father's Day activities at Colonial Downs this afternoon at the New Kent track.

The regular Colonial Downs jockeys participated in the ostrich race and Alexa Reisfield was the only rider that was able to stay aboard her ostrich and thus was declared the winner. She guided "Ozzie" in the sixteenth of a mile race.

In the Camel Derby, Colonial Downs jockey Sarah Rook guided her humped animal to the winners circle over RIR President Dennis Bickmeyer's camel, which finished last.

And in the animal mascot race, Risky – from the Richmond Raiders — defended his title successfully, though it was a close contest. Other competitors included Rodney The Ram, Kickeroo, Little Caesar, Cookie (from Sweet Frog) and Webstur (from the University of Richmond). Spider mens basketball coach Chris Mooney assisted in the events on Sunday as well.

Colonial Downs hosts its second richest race of the year — the $300,000 Colonial Turf Cup — next Saturday.
