June 27, 2013

(NEW KENT, VA) — Horacio Karamanos, the all-time leading jockey at Colonial Downs, made his 10,000th career start in tonite’s (Thursday’s) fourth race at the New Kent track aboard #4 Tape Deck, one day shy of his 40th birthday.

Heading into this week’s action, Karamanos had 9,996 career mounts --- he got two in yesterday during a rain shortened card, then got numbers 9,999 and 10,000 in this evening’s respective third and fourth race.

Many of those 10,000 mounts have come at tracks outside of Virginia, but the Buenos Aires, Argentinian native has raced at Colonial regularly since 2002. He won local riding titles here in 2002, 2005, 2007 and 2008. He won the ‘07 Virginia Derby aboard 37-1 long shot Red Giant and most recently, brought 50-1 long shot London Lane home in last Saturday’s $300,000 Colonial Turf Cup.

Nicknamed “Special K”, Karamanos has won 1,600 career races and his horses have earned over $35,000,000.
