(NEW KENT, VA - 7/30/14) – Colonial Downs will play host to cowboys and cowgirls from all over the country in the Virginia Stampede Pro Rodeo this coming Friday & Saturday evening, August 1 & 2, at the New Kent track.
This IPRA (International Pro Rodeo Association) sanctioned event, presented by Myrna's Boots 'n Bits, will feature seven different competitions including bull riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling, team roping and more.
Participants from ten different states as far west as Kansas, Arkansas and Missouri will compete throughout the weekend. Over 20 metro Richmond entrants including a dozen from Mechanicsville will help give the Virginia Stampede a local flavor as well.
25-year-old Taylor Earnhardt, daughter of the late auto racing great Dale Earnhardt, will travel to New Kent from Davidson, North Carolina to compete in the barrel racing and breakaway roping events on Friday. Her husband, Brandon Putnam, will also be on hand to compete in the tie down roping category that evening.
"It's still a mystery to the public here that you can go to rodeo nationals in Las Vegas and see local competitors on that kind of national stage," said Tom Farmer, whose Rockin' F Rodeo Company puts on the Virginia Stampede. "People assume that all top rodeo athletes are from out west but over the last 10-15 years, there's been a fair amount of world champions that have been born east of the Mississippi."
Advance sale general admission tickets to this weekend's shows are $15 for adults and $5 for kids 12 & under. A $30 Family 4-Pack is available as well. Grandstand seating is $25 for adults & $12 for kids. Day of prices will increase.
Doors open at 6 PM each night; live country music will begin at 6:15 PM Friday with Runaway Rodeo and on Saturday with Jackson Ward. The Stampede begins at 7:30 PM and the bands will play for an additional hour after the rodeo ends.
